HKS affiliate, Cathy Lanier, receives prestigious award

The Public Service Award Luncheon is the Harvard Club's flagship event of the year. Ten HKS alums from the HKS DC Alumni Council made up a special table to support this year's recipient, former Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier. Spearheaded by new Councilor, Barbara Zadina, HKS alums enjoyed lunch at the Willard InterContinental Hotel, where Ms. Lanier was presented with the 2017 Public Service Award. HKS alums had an extremely unique and rewarding opportunity to experience the life of the blind. Called Dining in the Dark, the event was the brainchild of HKS alum Sara Minkara, HKS 2013, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Empowerment Through Integration (ETI), and generously hosted by Ruba Yousef Al Hassan, HKS 2013, Senior Advisor to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ambassador, at the UAE Embassy. The purpose of the event was to generate not only an understanding of what life is like without sight, but also stimulate a conversation to dispel the notion that blindness means helplessness. Next Generation of HKS DC Alumni Councilors Elected, Take Office

The HKS Alumni Council, Washington D.C. is a body of 15 alumni who act on behalf of the 9,000+ HKS alumni who reside or work in the DC metropolitan area. Each year a number of new councilors are elected by the HKS community in DC. Following this year's election, the Council can now announce the new Council for 2017-18. The first meeting of this new Council will take place on Monday June 12th. Thank you to the 19 alums who put their names forward, and the 8 councilors who were elected this year. Congratulations to everyone involved.
