Three Things We Learned at Happy Hour with the Kennedy School Review
The DC Alumni Council is always looking for ways to connect back to campus, and this summer, we moved forward on that goal!
On July 12, the Council co-hosted a happy hour with the Kennedy School Review (KSR), HKS’s leading student-run policy journal. Current and former KSR editors brought copies of the 2018 print journal and shared a few of the ways alumni can be part of the publication’s growing community of readers and writers.
Over drinks at Front Page, we caught up with classmates and discovered a few tidbits worth sharing:
1. KSR is not your great-grandfather’s academic journal.
KSR is no dry tome destined for a dusty bookshelf. KSR publishes readable, timely news analysis and thoughtful takes on the future of policy in the forms of an annual print journal, an active website, and a podcast. Writers, interviewees, and readers include current HKS students, alumni, faculty, and other smart thinkers around the world.
When asked to share a few of their favorite pieces, outgoing editor Marie Lawrence and incoming editor Michael Auslen pointed us to an online series on the future of American political parties, a print journal article on immigration detention centers and the companies that run them, and podcasts on the March for Our Lives and inspiring gender equity work in India.

3. KSR wants to engage you as a writer or interviewee.
As much as we alumni enjoy reminiscing about our days in Cambridge, current students are eager to connect with us here in DC. KSR editors said they’re interested in receiving pitches for online op-eds or long-form research pieces, as well as building a bank of prospective interviewees for articles and podcasts.
