HKSDC Forum: Friends or Adversaries - Where is US Foreign Policy Headed?

The HKS DC Alumni Council and its newly-formed International Policy Roundtable are thrilled to welcome Ambassador Wendy Sherman, Senior Fellow at the HKS Belfer Center and Senior Counselor at Albright Stonebridge Group, in a dynamic conversation moderated by Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat, distinguished former HKS Professor and Senior Counsel at Covington & Burling. You won't want to miss this candid discussion between two leaders who have been in the room  with past presidents when the decisions were made, as they unpack the foreign policy challenges facing the US, including nuclear non-proliferation in North Korea and Iran, gobal trade, and the state of US alliances.

During Ambassador Sherman’s distinguished service as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs at the US Department of State, she oversaw the bureaus for Africa, East Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Eurasia, the Near East, South and Central Asia, the Western Hemisphere, and International Organizations. She also led the US negotiating team and was a central player in reaching a successful conclusion of the Iran nuclear agreement. In recognition of her diplomatic accomplishments, she was awarded the National Security Medal by President Barack Obama.

Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat has held senior positions in three US administrations, including White House Domestic Poilcy Advisor to President Carter, US Ambassador to the EU, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, Under Secretary of State for Economic, Business, and Agricultural Affairs, and Deputy Secretary of the Treasury in the Clinton Administration. Currently he leads the international practice at Covington & Burling, focusing his work on resolving international trade problems and business disputes. A beloved former HKS professor, Ambassador Eizenstat will draw on his own extensive experience to guide Ambassador Sherman in a lively, insightful discussion on current global policy issues, followed by Q&A with alumni.

The HKS International Policy Roundtable is a new DC interest group for HKS alumni, founded by HKS alums Peter Lichtenbaum and Lala Qadir, both of Covington & Burling. The group aims to coalesce a community of alumni interested in issues of foreign policy, trade and development through roundtable discussions and policy events.
