Collaboration and Complexity in Managing COVID

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the challenges of coordinating a public health response amid a patchwork of state and local health systems, governments and political divide. Efforts were further complicated by the complex nature of distilling and communicating developments in science in ways partners and the public understand and trust. A presidential election year further complicated the ability to triage the crisis and stem the spread of new threats to public health and the economy.

This virtual event is our second installment in partnership with the Treasury Executive Institute (https://home.tei.treasury.gov/), a leading provider of federal shared services. TEI provides virtual and onsite training to senior executives and leaders at the Department of the Treasury and to more than forty other federal Departments and agencies in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area and other locations across the country.

Our panel with two esteemed doctors with direct frontline and government experience will examine lessons learned over the past year on vaccine delivery and distribution. Additionally, how has the Presidential transition impacted national strategy during such a pivotal time?    We will highlight how the federal government has collaborated with state, tribal governments and local jurisdictions to treat and protect communities, especially those most vulnerable and underserved. The forum will also explore what has worked well in certain states and competencies needed to be strengthened. How has the federal government built coalitions with community partners, non-profit organizations and the private sector to efficiently distribute the vaccine and educate the public?   

The Panel

Natalie Brand

The panel will be moderated by Natalie Brand, Award-winning journalist and Washington, DC-based correspondent for CBS News and CBS affiliates nationwide. Since March 2020, a large focus of Natalie’s reporting has remained on the federal response to the Coronavirus pandemic from the White House to Congress.

Dr. Kavita Patel

Dr. Kavita Patel serves as a Nonresident Fellow at the Brookings Institution, advisor to the Bipartisan Policy Center, and member of the Health and Human Services Physician Focused Payment Model Technical Advisory Committee, as well as internal medical practitioner in the clinical environment. Her previous roles included deputy director on health for the late Senator Ted Kennedy, and White House director of policy for the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Engagement under the Obama Administration. Her work contributed significantly to policy development and evaluation related to health reform and financial regulatory reform.

Dr. Joseph Sakran

Dr. Joseph V. Sakran is a trauma surgeon, coalition builder, policy advisor, public health expert, and nationally recognized advocate for gun violence prevention. He serves as Director of Emergency General Surgery, Associate Professor of Surgery, and Associate Chief of the Division of Acute Care Surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. A survivor of gun violence, Dr. Sakran’s interest in medicine and trauma surgery began after a stray bullet nearly killed him during his senior year of high school. He subsequently dedicated his life to treating the most vulnerable, reducing health disparities among marginalized populations, and advancing public policy that alleviates structural violence in low-income communities.
